Solid waste management assessment in Freetown, Sierra Leone

WASTE has been asked to do a waste management assessment in the city of Freetown in Sierra Leone. A short inventory with an interesting result.

What we do

WASTE has been asked to do a waste management assessment in the city of Freetown in Sierra Leone. Five International NGOs working in WASH, namely, Concern Worldwide, OXFAM, ACF, Save the Children and Goal, have formed the Freetown Urban WASH consortium to help improve the health status of urban citizens, in collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone. The consortium is active in 30 vulnerable urban communities in Freetown. Realising that the dire waste management situation also has a big influence on the health situation the Consortium has asked WASTE to do a situation analysis of the solid waste management in Freetown and give recommendations for improvement.

How we do it

The recommendations of the situation analysis will allow Consortium members to incorporate approaches for solid waste management in the second phase of their joint WASH programme.

The two specific objectives are to (1) examine community based solid waste management in urban and peri-urban areas in Freetown and to (2) provide sustainable waste management options for the target areas of the WASH consortium.
