A hydro-geologist by training, Niels was Programme manager of the WASTE projects in the Dutch WASH Alliances (NL Government subsidized, for the period 2011-2015) in seven countries in Africa and Asia. From 2013 he is country-responsible for Benin in Ethiopia within WASH Programme and works on developing of training materials and tools.
He conducted groundwater research in the Kalahari desert and in the Netherlands. During the last ten years, he taught 4 years general sciences and geography in secondary schools. From 2001-2003 Niels was manager of local water and sanitation programs for Action Against Hunger / ACF in Indonesia, Sierra Leone, and Myanmar. In 2007, he joined WASTE to strengthen the training capacity of the organisation and to be the regional desk officer for s anitation and waste projects in peri-urban areas in Western Africa (Mali, Benin, Ghana). During 2010 he was coordinator of the WASTE School Sanitation Project in Africa.
